Extinction

Five times the world ended. Five times it began again. This is the chronicle of what survived.

Overview

The official record of life on Earth is also a record of its near-total destruction — five times over, across geological time. Extinction is the Unwaking Library's account of each of those events: what they were, what caused them, and what the Archive knows about what caused them that the scientific record does not.

Ariaste was not present for all five. But the Library holds records that predate human memory, and some of what those records contain about the mass extinctions reframes what they meant within the Aethereal Stories cosmology. The chronicle of what survived is also, quietly, the chronicle of what survived on purpose.

Narrator

Like all titles in the Aethereal Histories, Extinction is narrated by Ariaste — the immortal archivist of the Unwaking Library, the long witness whose record covers the full span of the mortal world. Ariaste was there. The vantage is long. The voice is restrained.

Theme

Extinction is concerned with the relationship between destruction and continuation — with the proposal that each extinction event was not simply catastrophe but transition, and that the forces shaping the Aethereal Stories universe were present for, and in some cases implicated in, each one.

Archive Status

This entry is a stub. The full record of Extinction will be expanded as the book is published.

Series

Extinction is part of the Aethereal Histories, shelved in The Unwaking Library — the Mortal Era strand of the Aethereal Stories universe. The hidden record of the mortal world, compiled by Ariaste across centuries.
